The Inspired Diabetic book launch

One of my amazing authors, Lyndon Wissart released his first book, The Inspired Diabetic, at the end of January 2017, at the Institute of Directors in London. The Inspired Diabetic, published by Filament Publishers Ltd, shares Lyndon unique story and his specific recipe, which as a professional British chef, cured his type 2 diabetes in 105 days, naturally without medication!

When Lyndon was diagnosed he was determined that this would not be a life sentence. The thought of spending the rest of his life on medication with a long list of foods he couldn’t eat, made him think that there must be an alternative. If it was food that caused the problem in the first place, then surely changing his diet could undo the damage. With his 30 years’ professional knowledge of food, he set about researching what could make a difference. By putting into practice what he learnt, he successfully managed to completely cure himself in 105 days.  In his popular book, he shares his journey and shows how anyone can do the same – if they have the knowledge and determination.

Lyndon Wissart’s ‘The Inspired Diabetic’ book launch January 2017

‘Working in kitchens all day,’ says Lyndon, ‘I was surrounded with all sorts of tempting foods. My weakness was desserts and, of course, I had to try them to make sure they were alright! When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, my blood glucose reading was nearly off the scale at 15.9 and I was experiencing all sorts of unpleasant complications. I didn’t want this to turn into a life sentence and I certainly didn’t want to spend my life on medication. So I put to use all the knowledge I had gained about food to see what I could do to make a difference. What I achieved amazed me – and my dietitian and doctors!’

Lyndon has shared his journey from diagnosis to cure in 105 days in his book. ‘I know how devastating a diagnosis can be but if you think of it as an opportunity, then you are in the right mindset to do something about it. I have proved that with a sensible fitness regime and an intelligent diet based on good information, you too can achieve what I have done.’

The Inspired Diabetic is 174 pages, costs £14.99 and is printed in full colour. It is available to buy from Amazon, all good book shops and through the Filament bookshop at

The Power of Three

by Author, Editor and Book Coach, Wendy Yorke

What is your reader's call to action after reading your book?

What is your reader’s call to action after reading your book?

Becoming a published author is a transformational journey of massive learning and tremendous growth and having a Book Coach and Editor to help you along the path is invaluable. A professional and experienced book buddy supports, guides and helps you to develop your manuscript…to make it into the best book it can be and…makes sure you never give up, or duck out!

At the November Authorcraft event, at the Institute of Directors in London, Wendy provided an entertaining and interactive book coaching session, to demonstrate the power of three, critically important book coaching questions.

Wendy started her session with a quick quiz using three questions, about three famous authors, whose personal stories each had a relevant message for new writers.

  1. Write for your chosen niche; Michael Morpurgo, won the J.M. Barrie Award 2016 for his contribution to children’s literature. Since the 1970s, he has focused on his niche with140 published titles to his name, the most famous being, War Horse.
  1. Make your manuscript stand out; J K Rowling, who was rejected 12 times before being published by the Bloomsbury Group. However, it is claimed that she was discovered because she used a colourful manuscript binder, which attracted the attention of eight year old Alice, who demanded more than the sample chapter from her father, the commissioning editor.
  1. Never give up; Paul Beatty, who was rejected 18 times before being published by an independent husband and wife team and won the 2016 Man Booker Prize with his American satire, The Sellout.

Wendy’s three critical, book coaching questions for all WRITERS who want to become published AUTHORS are:

What is your purpose? Your purpose for you and your purpose for other people, what will you benefit from writing your book and what will other people benefit from reading your book?

Who are you doing it for? Who are your ideal readers? Research and know them really well so you can write for them. Be specific about their age and gender, their habits, where they live and where they go on holiday? Wendy suggested giving names to your ideal readers and making a Vision Board of images to represent them, to help you write specifically for your target audience.

Why you rather than someone else? What is it that will make a person buy your book rather than the books on either side of it on the bookshelf? What is your USP and your special offering that no one else has provided yet?

Plus one bonus question:

What is your call to action for your readers? What is the one thing you want readers to do as a result of reading your book; or are there several actions they can take; what are you giving them that will help solve their problems and pains; and what is it that you have, that they want?

When you have 100% clarity about these answers, writing your book will flow effortlessly and the results will be magical. The Power of the Reader Report

Wendy Yorke, Author, Editor and Book Coach presented to the September 2016, Authorcraft event at the Institute of Directors, London on The Power of the Reader Report. She provides the following support to help writers on their journey to become authors. Wendy works with Filament Publishing and the international Susan Mears Literally Agency to help authors publish.

Remember, there is plenty of help to transition from being a WRITER to being an AUTHOR. When you start working with a Book Coach and Editor you begin to make up your book team, before you add a publisher, designer, publicist and book business mentor to your book production team. And we all know that within a TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More!

Becoming a published author is a transformational journey of massive learning and tremendous growth and having a book/writing coach and an editor to help you along the path is invaluable. This professional and experienced book buddy supports, guides and helps you to develop your manuscript…to make it into the best book it can be and…makes sure you never give up, or duck out!

One of the most helpful and powerful support services your editor provides you with is a Reader Report. This is a professional, unbiased, objective opinion on your manuscript and its commercial potential before you submit your publisher or literary agent book proposal.

Writers can be too close to their own work to step back and be objective, but your editor is better placed to do this for you. They know what ‘good’ looks like and what publishers and literary agents are looking for.

A Reader Report is a supportive and informative critique of your written work. It provides you with an honest appraisal of your manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses and it recommends the next step of your author journey.

A Reader Report helps establish a practical, understanding relationship with your editor and helps to motivate and give you confidence to continue with your book publishing goal.

A Reader Report is a short, clear, honest assessment of your written work, focused on the following key aspects of every manuscript.

  • Does the manuscript achieve its author’s purpose?
  • Does the fictional manuscript engage the reader, with convincing intrigue?
  • Does the non-fictional manuscript engage the reader, establishing the author’s credibility and building trust, as well as providing solutions, answers or new techniques to solve the reader’s pains and problems?
  • Plot, character development, storyline (fiction)
  • Key message and or solution (non fiction)
  • Author’s voice, style and tone
  • Chapter weight, balance and flow
  • Editorial development potential
  • Grammatically correctness
  • Publisher or literary agent likely interest.

Every author needs to have complete clarity before they start to write; when they self-edit their manuscript; and when they brief their editor to provide their Reader Report. Having a book coach early on your journey to help you identify the answers to several critical author questions, helps every writer to become an author with more clarity and more quickly than doing this alone.

Can you answer the following questions or do you need the help of a book coach and editor to help you, before you invest in a Reader Report for your manuscript?

  • PURPOSE: What is your purpose in writing books?
  • AUDIENCE: Who are you writing your books for?
  • MARKET: Why will they buy your books rather than someone else’s?
  • STRUCTURE: How you have written your book?
  • PASSION: What is your key message, what value, solutions are you giving your readers?
  • CLARITY: What is your readers’ Call to Action

Receiving your first Reader Report can be a very exciting moment for every writer, because it probably provides you with your first professional feedback and is an important step in accepting constructive criticism on your work. But what do you do with your Reader Report?

Firstly, the Reader Report informs fictional writers where you need to develop your copy or make changes to key elements, in particular with your plot and character development. For non fiction writers, it informs you where to restructure, add/delete content, check facts, references, add an index for example and generally strengthen your manuscript as a commercial project.

Secondly and most importantly, all professional publishers and literary agents will need a copy of the Reader Report to be submitted with your Book Proposal.

Overcoming your fears

The infant River Thames in the Cotswolds as it starts its own personal journey 215 miles from source to sea

If fear is stopping you do things in your life, I have a powerful new way to manage it that can help you overcome its negative impact and benefit from the positives instead!

A feeling of fear or fearfulness can be disempowering, de-motivating and very unhelpful to many people. It can be an obstacle in the way, stopping people from achieving their goals. It can be a barrier that deflects people away from the direction they want to go in sending them off in other directions, all over the place!

The good news is, that you can set yourself free of fear. You can acknowledge your fear and work with it rather than against it. You can change your mind set and see fear in a different way.

One of the powerful and positive benefits of coaching is that it can help you to create for yourself an empowering perception. This can be done by focusing on your strengths and skills, and reframing your thinking, so you turn problems into opportunities, and negatives into positives.

Let me give you a personal example. I used to be fearful of speaking in front of lots of people; a common fear for many. I hated being the focus of everyone’s attention; their eyes and ears and thoughts!  So I took myself on a personal journey and discovered the value of working through these issues and confronting my fears.

I worked out what it was that I actually wanted instead of being fearful of what I didn’t want. I focused on my strengths and skills rather than what I saw as my weaknesses and threats; and I discovered that instead of FEAR, I had False Expectations Appearing Real – isn’t that a great way to see and understand your fear? Take a minute to think about it.

This really helped me, because once I had made the realisation that actually there was nothing to be afraid of, I was free to be me. Now I can talk in front of people with passion, sharing a clear message from my heart with nothing stopping me.

You can make the same exciting discovering for yourself. The key to reframing your fears is to ask yourself three useful coaching questions.

  1. How does this problem make me feel i.e. A?
  2. What is the opposite of that feeling i.e. B?
  3. How can I change that feeling from A to B?

In coaching, this is called taking your disempowering perception, all the “I can’t” and “I should” language in your head and turning them into empowering perceptions “I can” and “I will”. You see how this is already much stronger and more confident.

It is taking you away from the undesired state to your desired state of being. It is actually about understanding how to use your mind’s language to specifically achieve the desired state, the one you want.  This is the wonderful world of Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP as we call it in coaching.

Another way to help you live a better life, free from fears and anxieties, is to clearly understand your personal core values. This will help you to use them daily to motivate you, understanding what you want in your life; and how to lead the life you want – maybe I’ll write about that another day!

I hope this is helping you. Please contact me if you would like my support on your journey; or for more details.

How do you perceive reality?

Rock Abstract, Kalbarri National Park, Western Australia - What do you see?

Rock Abstract, Kalbarri National Park, Western Australia – What do you see?

If we give this question our attention, it can help us all to understand ourselves better and to improve the way we see the world and respond. It is a question that fascinates me, because we know that reality is unique for each of us. As individuals, we record our perceptions, our internal representations, and our interpretation of reality, differently.

Let me explain. We know we integrate reality through our 5 senses: seeing; hearing; smelling; tasting; touching. These are our internal representations which create our personal, physical states, so we say things like “I feel happy / warm / hungry / sad / angry/ tired” etc.

These states create our behaviour, which in turn create our actions and thus our results. For example, “the sun is shining and it’s warm. I can feel the warmth and see the sun, which makes me happy. I am smiling and feeling open, generous and generally on top form. I feel as if I could cope with anything that comes my way, and so I respond positively to the world around me”.

Now to add this, the experts tell us that we are exposed to at least 2 million bites of unconscious information everyday and that we can only take in 134. So, what we do is to filter all these bites through 3 internal filters; delete, distract, or generalise.

We also have objective filters of time, space, matter and energy; and subjective filters which are our values, beliefs, attitudes and cultural backgrounds. These are sometimes known as our meta data and these create our preferences, such as: I like tall men; colourful flowers; people like me etc.

So to add all this up, a camera takes in facts and records them, while we in contrast, subjectively record our perceptions and internal representations, and we interrupt these into our personal reality. Which is why reality is not the same for all of us. And, if we raise our self-awareness and understand ourselves better, we will be clearer about our own reality and how we can create an improved reality.

So, if things in your life are not going the way you want them to,  you can change it. Your can alter your state, your behaviour, your actions and thus your results.

To reflect this concept I want to share with you this wonderfully profound quote from Dr Seuss who taught us so much.

“You have BRAINS in your HEAD

You have FEET in your SHOES.

You can STEER yourself any
